DUH, There Is A Focus Group In My Pants

As State Fair closes, officials puzzle at low turnout

Crowds at event drop 7 percent over last year despite sunny weather, slate of musical acts.

The Michigan State Fair ended Monday, and officials plan to meet soon to try to figure out what caused this year's disappointing attendance.

Through Sunday, attendance at the nation's oldest fair was down 7 percent -- and General Manager Steve Jenkins spent a good portion of Labor Day trying to find out why.

"I've been sitting here trying to figure it out," said Jenkins, who didn't have the exact attendance figure. "You sure can't blame the weather."

Duh...before you go blowing money on a focus group let me educate you, 1 in 11 people in Michigan are unemployed and gas is almost 4 bucks a gallon. Drop the ticket price and forgo any parking fees.

There you go free of charge, save the 50 grand you would probably spend trying to figure that one out, then patting yourselves on the back for a job half-assed done and bring the Michigan State Fair into the 21st century with some real draws people will travel to see and enjoy.

And for those of you not from Michigan, for decades the state fair has been held in the crappiest of crime riddled neighborhoods.

Why?

Tradition of course.

Some Movement On The Job Front

Some positive movement on the job front, I had an interview Friday with a contract house that seemed positive and I believe they are going to start shopping me around.

It is such a hugely, employer market that this is good news for me...I suspect for every job opportunity in Michigan or the metro areas, that dozens if not hundreds of applicants are submitted.

Anyhow I have "sensed" a very slight upturn in the economy as far as job opportunities I am seeing online and in the paper...very slight and nothing scientific mind you.

I think it may be tied to optimism about the election, but thats just my 2 cents....wish me luck.

Kwami Tries To Negotiate Fate

Hearings loom as plea talks stumble

Judge to rule today on mayor's bid to stop governor from considering removal; legal experts predict appeal.

Prosecutors and attorneys for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick didn't negotiate over the holiday weekend, leaving plea talks at an impasse on the eve of a crucial week in the mayor's tenure, according to a source close to the talks.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Ziolkowski is set to rule at 10 a.m. today on Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's efforts to halt hearings set for Wednesday by Gov. Jennifer Granholm on the City Council's request that she remove him from office for public misconduct.

No matter Ziolkowski's decision, legal experts predict an immediate appeal, which could buy the mayor time to cut a deal before the hearings.

Kilpatrick's lawyers claim in court papers Granholm has already made up her mind to remove the mayor.

"There's going to be appeals," said Curt A. Benson, a law professor at Thomas Cooley School of Law. "That's the way the game is being played."

Even so, Granholm plans to begin the hearings if she wins in court -- even if the mayor appeals.

"We are planning on holding a hearing unless a court tells us otherwise," said Liz Boyd, the governor's spokeswoman.

Through his attorneys, Kilpatrick has signaled to prosecutors that he is willing to quit, plead guilty to two felonies and pay the city a six-figure restitution to resolve eight felonies stemming from the text-message scandal.

But his reluctance to serve jail time -- and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's insistence that he does -- stalled talks again last week.

What Kwami doesn't realize because his ego is so gargantuan is you don't get to negotiate or arbitrate your punishment for a crime you committed.

You get sentenced and serve your punishment...that's how it works....imagine a world where convicted criminals got to debate what their sentence should be...right Kwami...only in your world.

And Granholm didn't decide a thing, what else could she do but follow the law and public outcry?...she had no decision to make it was made for her.

Its A Feeding Frenzy

McCain fought money on teen pregnancy programs

Republican John McCain, whose running mate disclosed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, has opposed proposals to spend federal money on teen-pregnancy prevention programs and voted to require poor teen mothers to stay in school or lose their benefits.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's announcement Monday about her daughter Bristol was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. Palin said her daughter intends to raise her child and marry the baby's father, identified in news reports as Levi Johnston, 18, of Wasilla, a high school hockey player whom Bristol has dated for about one year. The baby is due in late December.

On the face of it you might think I would be jumping for joy at such revelations as the pregnancy and the surrounding hoopla...actually I would rather not dwell on it or maybe I should say celebrate it.

This kid probably had such unimaginable pressure I can only feel pity...just think about it, your mom says she is running for Vice President of the United States and you know in the back of your mind you have what potentially is her downfall in your body and its only going to grow and it will come out sooner or later in the news.

I'm surprised the kid could even eat.

My biggest problem at her age was if I was going to be able to ask a girl on a date and get the car from dad.

McCain vetter defends Palin review

Sarah Palin voluntarily told John McCain's campaign about her pregnant teenage daughter and her husband's 2-decade-old DUI arrest during questioning as part of the Republican's vice presidential search, the lawyer who conducted the background review said.

The Alaska governor also greatly detailed the dismissal of the state's public safety commissioner that has touched off a legislative investigation, Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. told The Associated Press in an interview Monday.

Palin underwent a "full and complete" background examination before McCain chose her as his running mate, Culvahouse said. Asked whether everything that came up as a possible red flag during the review already has been made public, he said: "I think so. Yah, I think so. Correct."

McCain's campaign has been trying to tamp down questions about whether the Arizona senator adequately researched his surprise vice presidential selection or whether he chose the first-term governor without fully looking into her background.

Nicolle Wallace, a senior McCain adviser, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that Palin disclosed her daughter's pregnancy during the vetting process, and that the McCain campaign had been forced to reveal the pregnancy publicly Monday because of "lewd and outrageously false rumors" spread by "Democratic-leaning blogs and a few in the mainstream" media. She did not identify them.

Since McCain publicly disclosed his running mate on Friday, the notion of a shoddy, rushed review has been stoked repeatedly.

Sorry I don't think this is any worse than what the Republican party has done on the reverse when able.

Please don't take the high road, BOTH the Democratic and Republican parties have shown they will do and say virtually anything to get the upper hand.

I am losing faith in the whole democratic process because of the ethics and morals displayed during every election by both sides....there is no shame.

I also DO think the vetting process was shoddy, the McCain camp was in such a hurry to get a viable female candidate into the fray they didn't care or didn't concern themselves as to what baggage may be dragged behind her, this just shows how little they think of Palin, her ability and the office of vice President of the United States.

I believe I have had more in depth interviews to scrub floors.

...now this kids life is virtually destroyed because her family's and the McCain's family's goals and aspirations....any chance at normalcy for this unwed daughter is now long, long gone.

Imagine the humiliation of everyone in the world knowing you had sex, ESPECIALLY at her age, public opinion and peer pressure are virtually gods to a kid that age.
