U.S Steel Only Pays $300 A Pop To Poison Children

Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel Corp. will pay $4.45 million to settle a class-action lawsuit by residents of Ecorse and River Rouge over air pollution from an Ecorse plant the company purchased out of bankruptcy in 2003.

Judge Avern Cohn of the U.S. District Court in Detroit approved the settlement Thursday with roughly 7,000 residents allegedly affected by smoke and metallic particle emissions from the U.S. Steel Great Lakes Works plant.

Under the terms of the settlement, residents who fill out paperwork as part of the affected class will receive $300 apiece, for a cumulative $2.1 million. Approximately $1.3 million will be divided between plaintiff attorney Jason Thompson of Southfield-based J. Thompson & Associates P.L.C. and co-counsel from two other local law firms. Another portion goes to court costs and other fees.

“It’s a fair and reasonable settlement, but it’s like many settlements in that each side probably wishes it got a little more,” he said.
